Chapter 3
Internal Revenue Service
“Late again” Kurt thought. He finished starting his machines and shifted into her seat. Swinging the camera around, he zoomed in, one block then another all the way to the parking garage. “Nothing yet” he thought. She really didn’t have to be here early like Kurt, He got all the wheels turning and brought the inside of the van to life. He understood the technical parts of the spy and recording hardware and software. He could keep things hidden and running smoothly. Diane’s job was more to keep things focused on the important areas and to cut out all the unnecessary and boring mundane footage and splice together the important parts to make prosecution possible. The department had a motto, “We Use Evidence and Only Evidence”, and Diane was quite good at trimming the fat off all the tapes and only presenting the important evidence. Kurt continued to check for Diane to be coming as he recorded a rather busy day for the store. Sometimes watching and sometimes not, people came and went without any real indication of anything afoul. Lunch came and went without incident but Kurt was checking for Diane more and more often.

Joe closed the shop for lunch, he really just went through the motions to close because if someone came by and knocked, he would let them right in and most of his regular customers knew that. He went into the back and positioned the new computers that were dropped off, two laptops and a PlayStation.  Joe was comfortable here in the back. He was surrounded with the electronics that he had repaired. He would rather just stay back here and have someone take care of the front desk. He would have someone to talk to during the quiet times in the shop. Yeah, that would be nice he thought, to have a girl working out front that he could talk too. It was all nonsense; a stupid thought and he knew it. He started to get a rent payment ready for Walter. He would have to do a lot more business to afford a helper, more business would raise more suspicion and would land him right into the question he was trying so hard to conceal, “Who are you?” He didn’t want that, no, he went through a lot of trouble to set himself up without having to explain who he is or where he came from.
