Chapter 3
Internal Revenue Service
Click, clack; click, clack, Diane walked through the front glass doors and proceeded right past the front desk then past the security desk. “Your pass,” one of the guards said. She turned and smiled at him as she walked and he said “Oh, never mind” then turned to his partner and lied “I know her, ah, I remember her”.
She walked down the hall of glass front offices and stopped at her boss’s office, knock, knock, even as she saw she was being waved in. “Ms. Winchester” was not only on the door, it was on her desk and on the pass hanging from a chain around her neck. “I’ve been waiting for you”, she said with a half-smile. Diane quickly glanced at the clock and saw 8:02. “Sorry”, she said as she sat down. “No, no, it wasn’t long, I just need this meeting for my report” she explained, “How exactly is it going out there?” That is exactly how she would ask, how “exactly” is it going? She went exactly by the book. “It’s going just fine!” Diane answered, “We’ve been set up for almost a week and the recordings are all clear. I haven’t cut any tape for you as I’m still learning the players and our subject hasn’t showed up yet, after we tape him, I’ll make you a demo and give you something more complete.” “Well okay, I guess I’ll just have to wait.” Ms. Winchester said harshly, “How’s Kurt?” “Kurt? He’s fine, I guess, he’s in the van now, probably waiting for me to show,” she quipped “I don’t think I mentioned coming in to the office to him.”
Diane hated this meeting already. As Mrs. Winchester droned on and on expounding on Kurt’s talents and achievements in the Investigative division, she pondered that it might be Kurt himself that was ahead of her for a promotion. “Yes, Kurt really knows his way around the equipment” she piped, “He helps to film hours and hours of video and recordings for me to produce into a report that will give you the information you need to continue the investigation.” As much as she wanted to say “But” she held her tongue and asked if there were any other important finds and information developing on any other projects. “Not that I can share” was the stern answer.
