Chapter 5
Cutting the Tape
Once home, Diane kicked of her heels, as usual, and poured a glass of wine. She sat down and picked up her half-read novel and after reading a few pages, threw the book down exclaiming, you’re doing it all wrong! I’ll show you how to have romance! It’s my turn.
She got up and went to her desk. She carefully got tape after tape out of the box and put them in order. “This is going to take a while” she thought. Then she noticed that Kurt had marked some of the tapes as important. One even said “Rent Payment”. “Kurt! You did something right for once!” She said aloud, “This will make it much easier for me.” Knowing that, she retired to bed.
Diane woke up early and made herself coffee. She went to her desk and got an early start. While sipping her coffee she played the tape marked “Rent Payment”. It started off with the girls waiting outside the store for it to open. Joe came to the door and let them in and they were bouncing all around. Joe was with one of them and soon she gave him a big hugged and stared at her phone by the door. It appeared that Joe took a phone from a girl, but then a well-dressed man came in and Joe went into the office and came out with an envelope. He gave it to him and that was it. “All the work for that?” she thought. She continued watching hoping there was more to it. Joe took the phone into the backroom, and one of the girls, went behind the counter and put her ear to the door. She bolted back and Joe came out motioning them from behind the counter. They proceeded to give him big hugs, irritating Diane. They went outside, and Diane noticed they were now angry, and shouting at the store door. “Good” she thought, “Let’s not get quite so friendly.” “I wonder what he said to them as they left?”
Diane poured through the tape all day long, stopping only for short breaks to eat and drink. She had almost made it through half when her eyes couldn’t take anymore and she gave up for the night. Sixteen hours straight, definitely a record, time to get some sleep. As she lies there winding down, she couldn’t help thinking about the many people that seemed to leave the store mad. Mostly men but even some women seemed angry when they got outside the store. Diane really wanted to know what the reason was, as she had gone into the store and when she came out did not have the slightest bit of anger in her. “What was going on?” She thought, as she drifted off to sleep.
