Chapter 5
Cutting the Tape
Lunch went smooth, very smooth, as both desperately tried to keep it that way. Diane kept reminding herself to use charm, and Joe mostly listened attentively. She told him about her apartment and the view of the park, and mentioned her field work and desires for a promotion, while he talked about working at the recycling plant with Jimbo. Yes, lunch had went well, when Joe spoke up and said “We ought to do this again!” “Yes” Diane answered, “Next week? “Sure” Joe replied, “Wait, we could make it Friday? “Friday? She said, “Well, okay I guess, Friday it is!”
As they left, they both stood on the sidewalk in front of the shop and looked at each other waiting for what’s next. Diane broke the pause by saying, “Well okay, I’ll stop at your shop Friday” “I’m looking forward to it” “Good bye for now, I had a great lunch!” He spoke. “Me too”, she answered, and with that, she wheeled around and walked back towards the van.
As Diane approached the van, she hesitated and darted into a little candle shop instead. Best kill some time in case he’s still watching me, she thought. She spent the next half hour smelling the scents and looking at the beautiful candles, buying a few as she shopped. “I feel wonderful” she thought. Suddenly, that thought faded and she realized that she had to get to work, and quickly! She had to arrange and cut all the tape, and get this case finished before Friday! She had to show Joe innocent of wrongdoing, point the finger at the real culprit, and wrap this case up. “I have to get to work” she thought, “and now!”
Diane stepped out, and proceeded to enter the van. “Where Have you,” but Diane cut Kurt off right there. “Gather up all the tape!”, she ordered. “Be ready to wind up our surveillance here.” I’m going to start cutting tape and I’m pretty sure my submission will end this assignment.

Kurt turned off all the equipment, securing the cameras for travel and jumped into the driver’s seat. He drove into the parking garage, flashing his badge for entrance. At her car he helped her transfer the tapes into her car and waited for her to say something, realizing this might be the last time they work together for a while. He smiled at her and she calmly said “Move the damn van so I can go!”
