It all started in the desert.

Tum, tump, thump, "Not now!" Diane said out loud to herself. Tum, tump thump, the car answered as she drove to work. Quietly she turned around and headed to the local garage. Tum, tump, THUMP! As she turned in, she thought, they must have heard that!
While waiting in line, the mechanic that had looked at the car before, came up and asked: "Is it making that noise again?" "Yes", she said. "Well let's go for a ride," he said as he smiled at her. He liked her and she knew it, but how could someone always be so dirty, she thought? She drove around the block thinking; the smell of the oil and grease won't wash off easy either.

He listened as she drove and politely said: "do you hear the noise"? "NO!" she said sternly, "it's a loud noise! You will hear it very clearly and loud!" "Okay", he said, "but I don't hear a noise." Diane went around again, faster this time. She jammed on the brakes then speeded up. She swerved and swore, but nothing would make the car make the noise. "It's hopeless", she said. "It just won't make the damn noise anytime you are in the car!" "Maybe it fixed itself", the mechanic told her. "Sometimes", he explained, "things just seem to fix themselves, I had a TV that wouldn't turn on once.  When the repairman came, it turned right on. Cost me fifty bucks but I know the darn thing just fixed itself" "You're lucky, I'm not going to charge you anything," he finished, "the darn thing just fixed itself"
She couldn't get that out of her head as she drove quietly back towards work, hmm, she thought, he was kind of cute and nice too, but the odor of gasoline was lingering in her car. "So, you fixed yourself, can you do something about this smell?" she mumbled to the car.
